Not too sure about direct objects, so I would like a wee bit of guidance if possible!

talking about a holiday... (Don't take offence as this is just for learning!)

"...Tarde comí a un restaurante con mi padre para probar comida típico estadounidense. ¡Hombre! No la recomiendo. Fue horrible. Comí una hamburguesa y mi padre comió fritas, y ambos comidas fueron fríos y repugnantes."

The important bit is 'No la recomiendo'. Is that correct?

Hi, jamie!!

"(...tarde??) comí en un restaurante con mi padre para probar la comida típica estadounidense. ¡Hombre! No la recomiendo. Fue horrible. Yo (personal pronoun required for contrast) comí una hamburguesa y mi padre comió (patatas??) fritas, y ambas comidas estaban frías y repugnantes."

A few mistakes but correctable. Don't understand what/where tarde comes in here.

Comí en un restaurante con mi padre para probar comida estadounidense típica. ¡Hombre! No la recomiendo. LA is correct here if you are talking about la comida. LO is correct here if you are talking about the act of eating this food. So both No lo recomiendo and No la recomiendo are correct depending on what you want to say. Estuvo horrible (if you are talking about the food) Fue horrible (if you are talking about the act of eating the food). Comí una hamburguesa y mi padre comió papas fritas y ambas comidas estuvieron frías y repugnantes.

Lots of ser vs. estar in the preterite tense here.

Wow thanks! Lots of little mistakes! And It had not occurred to me at all that I could be referring to the act. Informative answer, thank you! and it should have been 'más tarde', continuing a paragraph... thanks! - jamieculkin, May 24, 2011

I have to say, Yes. I say this because the "la" in "la recomiendo" is talking about the typical food of the U.S.----"comida" is feminine and "la" needs to be "la" and not "lo" in this case.....I hope this was half coherent. wink At least this post will get the ball rolling and the gurus will step in to help. smile
