The original Hebrew name was Matityahu (??????????????), borrowed by the Greeks as Matthaios (????????), and from them into Latin as Matthaeus. The Spaniards shortedned it and changed it to Mateo, and the French to Mathieu. The English language took it from the Normans (French) as Matthew.
Yes. My dad is from Peru and his name is Mateo, but he goes by Matthew in the states.
