What does "engarfia" mean?

I'm reading En la Ardiente Oscuridad, and I see the phrase, 'Engarfia las manos en el aire.' I've searched all over for what this means, but so far, I've had not luck. Any ideas, or is it possibly a typo?

You've come across a verb that it is used once every 50 years (ok, I'm making these figures up). It means "to get your hooks onto something" (remember Peter Pan), in a very metaphorical way.
