Actually yes it is somewhat similar. Velar means to mourn. Our dictionary does not reflect that definition.

You mourn someone with velar. Vela = candle. Desvelar means to keep awake. But "velar" can mean "wake" like a funeral wake, like "to remember, mourn, think of, watch over as he passes" you know, mourn.
