I saw on the news today a new book about the history of Area 51. Do you think it's a real place?

Answer in English and Spanish.

It's a real place, but the stories about what goes on there are often ridiculous.

True. I think more than anything, it's a test site (keep secret for security of course) for nuclear weapons and experimental government projects. That can include war machines, disease control, biological stuff... you get the idea. Stuff the public and... - DJ_Huero, May 19, 2011
... other government agencies can't know we do. They might do it better, and everyone knows Americans hate competition. Just look at the gangbang tactic from GM (Government Motors). ;-P - DJ_Huero, May 19, 2011
The best place to look for what goes on at Groom Lake is Aviation Week. - lorenzo9, May 19, 2011

It's a real place, but it's a government secret as well. I doubt anyone who leaves there lives long enough to tell about it.

I've worked with people who had worked there. They wouldn't talk about it, but they weren't afraid of being killed by the Feds. - lorenzo9, May 19, 2011
Hmmm... campfire stories are always, great... but the reality of the matter is, the government themselves have been proven to "eliminate threats" to their secrets. That includes, scientists, agents, and especially people who "don't exist". ;-) - DJ_Huero, May 19, 2011
The government also has ahabit of muddying the waters and using a lot of mundane stuff to cloak what they really want to hide. - lorenzo9, May 19, 2011
I agree with lorenzo9's previous comment. - jtt96, May 19, 2011

Back on April fool's day 2006, Google pushed a surprise placemark into Google Earth, at Area 51. This is a close-up view of that surprise:

Just this week I saw a writer on The Daily Show with a new book about Area 51. Her name is Annie Jacobson and she an editor for the L A Times. She claims that there were no E Ts at Area 51, but the Solvets sent one of their space craft to trick us and freak us out. If you want to see the interview, it's available on the Comedy Central web site.

That interview was quite fair, and well managed. Loved it. - pesta, May 20, 2011
I think that was the same woman that I saw, too! Have no idea what the channel was anymore - brainlady, May 21, 2011

You can see a blurry picture of area 51 on google maps. Just type in 'Area 51' It should have a long (several mile) runway.

Area 51

...
