Mendigo pronunciation

So going over things at work, I am told Mendigo is pronounced "MENdigo" like "Méndigo". Our dictionary says "Mendigo" like "Mendígo" (if it needed it which it doesn't) so what do you think? Gracias

I wish there were another talking dictionary. I use this one, (for the talking) the RAE, and the Oxford one. - jeezzle, May 18, 2011

I'm pretty sure, since mendigo does not have an accent, it is pronounced mendígo because of the natural stress. men - DEE - go

But several natives have told me otherwise. - jeezzle, May 18, 2011
Really? Then I'm stumped. I'll watch the other posts to see if I can learn something about this :) - GuitarWarrior, May 18, 2011
They are from the countryside, so they don't have the best grammar though. - jeezzle, May 18, 2011

Hi, Jeezz!

They are different words:

Méndigo: very bad (1)

Mendigo: beggar

(1) Méndigo

Que es mezquino o vil.

Ámbito: México, Galicia

Ejemplo: «María Rosa le sacaba la vuelta porque el muy méndigo una vez le agarró una nalga, ella moqueó su indignación en soledad, pero no fue suficiente como para que Colasa dejara de oler que algo estaba pasando.»

I don't understand, do the guys at work think Méndigo: very bad is for beggar too? They don't use the word mendigo for beggar? You pronounce it like Men DI go for begger and MEN di go for very bad, like es una persona MEN diga? - jeezzle, May 18, 2011
¡Oh! Nunca había visto o escuchado la palabra "méndigo" antes - Infame. Hm.. ¡algo nuevo todos los días! :-) - Gekkosan, May 18, 2011
Our dictionary here doesn't have Méndigo. - jeezzle, May 18, 2011
Aha! - GuitarWarrior, May 18, 2011
If Gekko hasn't heard it how could they have? Gekko - is Men DI go how you say it? - jeezzle, May 18, 2011
For begger? - jeezzle, May 18, 2011
Beggar should be pronounced men DI go everywhere. - cogumela, May 18, 2011
Another point to remember: men- DEE- goh is also the first person singular indicative of the verb "mendigar" (to beg), and men-di -GÓ is the preterit. - 002067fe, May 18, 2011
I am familiar with "méndigo" thanks to the Mexican soaps my family watched when I was a kid. Who says that the boob tube is bad for you? ;-) - 002067fe, May 18, 2011
