Because it reminds them of how old they are? Or that they're getting older? I don't know, haha. It doesn't bother me (yet)... I don't know how I'll feel about it later, lol. Also, maybe they don't want to see the person have a look of disbelief on their face (which can be good or bad... "You're kidding" can be taken 2 ways ).
Honestly, it's an old tradition that is absolutely senseless to me because it's sexist to an extent. It's not proper to ask a women her age, but if she wants to ask yours you should tell her? Of course, men are the ones who get a bad rap for messing with underage women, and then ignored when they say they didn't know... you rarely (if ever) hear of a women in the hot seat situation lol. Anyways, you've inspired me to read up on it, so I'll return with a better response. For now, my opinion is stupied traditional nonsense that has carried over all the way up to this generation as well.
Why do most women not say their real age?
simply because women are like the precious jewelry and precious jewelry never get old!! that's why there's no use of asking such a question!
I do not believe this to be true; if there is any legitimate reason to state their age, most women will do so without hesitation. The notion that a woman will not state her true age comes from the relatively raw instances where women refuse to do so - either from vanity, or refusal to answer an impertinent question, or because there is no good reason to divulge that information. As is often the case, it is the very noticeable, attention-getting exceptions that become the general expectation. I do not like to state my age because it sounds like I think I have more experience, knowledge or good sense than anyone younger than me. But if you want to know, I am 69 sliding rapidly uphill to 70.
We would say, "Why don't most women say what their real age is".
Porque es así, no tengo ningún idea. Recentamente tuve que decir, "Feliz descumpleaños" a mi amiga Maru, porque ella no quiso celebrarlo.
Fear of the following.
They are all sitting in God's waiting room getting nearer the door.
Can't you just tell by looking at this face that she is only 29?

Well, in the case of one of my crazy aunts, she always says she is looking for a husband who is "rich with one foot in the grave". So I guess in her case, she would have to ask for the age and bank account balance.
Well, I've been counting my birthdays backwards for years - I'm almost 60 now.
I tend to lean toward Tom's assessment of this social phenomenon. Overheard on the boob tube recently was a report that more & more men are having plastic surgery in the attempt to defy aging and its effects... just one excerpt from a website along the same vein:
A new report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that the number of cosmetic procedures among men in the United States increased by 2% last year, compared with 2009. Men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures, including both minimally invasive and surgical procedures, according to the report.
Of course, some of the procedures may be requested by relatively younger men who simply aren't satisfied with how a particular body part may appear to them, but it does tie into the perception that women aren't the only ones who are demonstrably concerned about the way they look and in most cases, on account of their age... just an aside, folks....
I know many men who simply won't reveal that about themselves. In fact, more men than women. The women I know tend to be more casual about age.
Some women like to maintain a little mystery about them., but I agree that most of them will tell their age for a legitimate reason. It is generally thought to be in poor taste to ask a woman's age. This year, in Spanish class, instead of asking ¿Cuántos años tienes? the teacher asked ¿Cuál es la fecha de su cumpleaños?, which I think was much better and avoided any problems that people might have had with saying their real age. At the final exam, however, he did ask everyone their age, and did appear to be shocked with some of the answers.
or because there is no good reason to divulge that information.
I think this is the best reason given so far.
but if she wants to ask yours you should tell her?
mason, what a silly thing to say ...women ask men their age? Why should we do that?
When my grandfather died my poor father discovered for the first time that my grandfather had lied his entire life and said that he was one year younger than he really was.
No idea how to say that in Spanish but I'll try:
Cuando mi abuelo murió, mi padre pobre descubierto por la primera vez que mi abuelo mentía toda su vida y decía que tenia un año menos de la verdad.
I stick to one and the same number for years. That's when I stopped counting. And the way I feel my age is
