Confusing English Words Challenge 13

Algunas palabras en inglés pueden crear confusion en los principiantes.

Some words in English can be confusing for learners.

This one is to practice the 2 words.Between – Among / Amongst

Both native Spanish and English speakers may answer - but write both Spanish and English sentences.

I would appreciate some help in checking the Spanish sentences.

Agradecería una cierta ayuda en la comprobación de las oraciones españolas.

I will "accept" the best effort after about a week

This is not so difficult but every attempt will get a vote.

NOTE - we need sentences in both Languages that illustrate how the the following are used.

a) Between

b) Among / amongst

Futher explanation as to the different meanings may be given.

Please do not suggest new words.

The ongoing pressure of having 5 kids has created a rift between them.

La presión continua de tener 5 hijos ha creado un distanciamiento/una brecha entre ellos.

Carrying a chihuahua around used to be a popular trend among celebrities like Paris Hilton.

Cargar con un perrito chihuahua a todos lados solía ser una modalidad popular entre celebridades tales como Paris Hilton.

She was glad she found a Spanish-speaker among all those Brits.

[Ella] se alegró de encontrar un hispanoparlante entre todos esos británicos.

Good Tom . Thanks - ian-hill, May 16, 2011
Yep - the essential difference is that "between" is usually for 2 things and "among" for many things. - ian-hill, May 19, 2011
Entre for both in Spanish I guess. - ian-hill, May 19, 2011

I can't choose between the white skirt and the green one.

De entre todas las faldas de la tienda, una me entró por el ojo.

From the song ¨El hombre que yo amo.¨

El hombre que yo amo está vivo en mi mente. Es mi único ídolo entre tanta gente

The man I love is alive in my mind. He's my only idol among so many people.

La niña encontró su pelota entre la casa y el arbol.

The girl found her ball between the house and the tree.

link text ...It is not strictly correct that between is used for two things and among for more than two.

When exactly two entities are specified, between should always be used: “This contract is entered into between the Seller and the Purchaser.”

However, when more than two entities are involved or when the number of entities is unspecified, the word choice depends on what you want to say. Between should be used where the relationship is distinctly one-to-one: “The agreement was entered into between the Seller, the Purchaser and the Guarantor.”

Among should be used where the entities are considered as a group, mass or collectivity: “There is consensus among shareholders that this approach be adopted.”...

My attempt:

1 Entre tú y yo, creo que los Bulls de Chicago a ganar la final de la Conferencia del Este. Between you and me, I think the Chicago Bulls will win the Eastern Conference Finals.
2 Entre los muchos fans de la NBA, los demás pueden tener opiniones diferentes. Among the many fans of the NBA, others may have different opinions.

Wow! but maybe ........ van a ganar - are going to win. :) - ian-hill, May 16, 2011
Good suggestion! I know "la familia - family" is singular; so would the Chicago Bulls team be singlular and use "va a ganar"? - bandit51jd, May 17, 2011
Yes - I agree in English we could regard them as a singular team or a plural group of players - but I am not sure in Spanish. - ian-hill, May 17, 2011
