Alternate Phrasing for Telling Time (?)
I'm reading a Spanish book that uses the phrase "a las once" for 11:00. Here at SpanishDict 11:00 would be "Son las once." Are these equivalent? Is one method preferred? Does it matter?
The book was written circa 1950. I'm wondering if "Son las ..." is more modern.

Those are not alternative answers, but answers to different questions:
What time is it? - It is 11 o'clock.
What time is it? - At 11 o'clock ( )
What time will they arrive? It is 11 o'clock. ( )
What time will they arrive? At 11 o'clock.
"It is 11 o'clock" is "Son las 11", while "At 11 o'clock" means "A las 11".
