Espero que lo están haciendo bien.
in English= I hope you are doing well. in Spanish=I hope that they are doing well.
So often when I send an email to a friend and I put "you" it ends up translating to "him" or "they".
I guess my question is...if someone reads an email with Espero que lo están haciendo bien., are they going to read it as I hope they are doing well or as the intended I hope you are doing well.
This may not make sense. I am really trying to learn spanish and am having great difficulties.
Perhaps I shouldnt pick things apart so much but I have noticed that when you seperate words it may mean something completely different than if you put other words with it. Just trying to figure things out....as I have already made some embarrasing errors.

First of all, it is an idiomatic expression and a collocation. The verbs "to do" and "to make" are often synonyms, but you can't say "I hope you are making well". Making what? Doing what? In Spanish it doesn't work like that. "Haciendo bien" can be used, for example, if you mean they are building something correctly, or taking an exam, but not if there is no definite task that can be graded.
Also, if you say "lo están haciendo bien", that's indicative, which means that you've just informed that they are indeed making something well. There is no point in saying that you hope that happens while clearly informing that it is indeed happening. Here, you must use subjunctive, or it would be a contradiction: "lo estén haciendo bien". But anyway, that's not what you intended to say. So, let's say:
Espero que todo les vaya bien.
Espero que lo están haciendo bien =I hope that they are doing well. Espero que lo estás haciendo bien =I hope that you are doing well

it is understandable and expected you are going to make errors while learning, else you'd already know.
Just be patient, and let your brain work to make it work in Spanish.
Translate from Spanish to your native language by transcribing a novel or an article, do not use a translator. Instead use a bilingual dictionary and use what you know in your native language. Watch movies in Spanish without close caption or subtitles.
Little by little you'll start to discern words first then whole sentences, ideas etc...
But do it, as nobody can do it for you.
Remember, you know how to read, write and express yourself in your own language, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the same in Spanish.
Hi Mollydolly! In Spanish we use to say: Espero que estés bien.=I hope you are doing good. Cómo andas/o cómo vas?=How you doing? It's not exactly cómo estás haciendo? Espero que ella/él este bien=I hope she/he is doing well Espero que ellos estén bien=I hope they are doing well
