What's the difference between maquillar and maquillarse?

I just have no idea what's the -arse add to the verb?

There is no -arse (that sounds pretty bad, hehe). Both verbs are the same: maquillar (to make up), but while the plain one is used to make other people up, the one with the 'se' (oneself) means that you make yourself up.

Welcome to the forum. It's actually the -se that's added. It's a pronoun, reflexive in this case. It says whether you're applying the makeup to yourself (maquillarse) or someone else (maquillar). This is a very common thing among verbs, not only used reflexively.
