The following comment was made about Julian's post:

In your first sentence, the subject is "comida" (singular). In your second sentence, the subject is "galletas." (plural).

I think you may have missed the point here. The logic you are employing looks at the question from the perspective of an English speaker where you expect the subject to always precede the verb. In Spanish, however, the subject can come before or after the verb (as demonstrated by the Julian's example). In this case, a more literal translation for both examples given might be "Cookies are my favorite food."

In regards to the differences between English and Spanish, you might consider consulting the RAE. According to their DPD (see 2.1.1.c), the norm, in such cases where the verb 'ser' is used to link together two noun phrases that differ in number, is to have the verb agree with the plural subject.

The plurality must conincide with the the subject even if the sentence is inverted.

Mi comida favorita son las galletas.

Las galletas son mi comida favorita.

I cannot say about Spanish, but the correct sentence in English would be:

My favorite food is cookies.

The verb agrees with the subject, not the object.

Cookies are my favorite food.

Es, because comida is a singular noun and is the main subject. Think of it in english.

My favorite food is cookies, not:

My favorite food are cookies.

But English and Spanish are not structured the same, and it might be better instead to look at it from a Spanish perspective. When ser acts as a copula, it is more common that in cases where there is a difference in number, it is more common that the... - Izanoni1, May 13, 2011

You can say both. But they are gramatically diferent.

In one case, the subject is "galletas", plural; in the other case, the subject is "comida" singular:

Mi comida favorita es las galletas.

Mi comida favorita son las galletas.

Nevertheless, the more common in Spanish would be:

Mi comida favorita son las galletas.

Since spanish translates very closely to English, I would recommend just thinking about it in English!

Which sounds better- My favorite food is the cookies

or

My favorite food are the cookies?

I recommend "Mis comidas favoritas son las galletas."

Spanish does not very closely translate to English most of the time. - Azabache, May 12, 2011
It's all relative. Compared to Chinese, it translates very closely. However, Azabache is right. - Beatrice-Codder, May 13, 2011

Mi comida favorita es las galletas. El sujeto es "comida" y es singular.
