Vos in México, a surprise.

One of our close friends had a visitor from Chiapas in México. And as we were being introduced around he was using "vos" just the same as our Argentine friend.

At first I thought he was Argentine also, but in reality in Chiapas the " vos is used,

Have any of you encountered this anywhere else in México or in any of the other Latin American countries other than Argentina ?

Chiapas being so far south, the vos influence has most likely filtered up through Central America. In any case, he sure seems like a rarity. You should lock this guy in a lab for extensive scientific study.

Jejej I found it strange as I have never heard it in México - pacofinkler, May 11, 2011
I've never encountered it in Mexico either. Mexican friends have always told me that it isn't used in Mexico. I think the lab idea is a good one! :) - NickDan, May 11, 2011

I know that Guatemaltans use "vos" --and probably Salvadorans use it too-- but I´ve never heard this form in Mexico. Maybe your friend is from a region near to Guatemala, such as Tapachula, or probably he was raised there.

I haven't heard anyone from the Chiapas region use "vos", but I'll let you know when I return from there in July.

No, I haven't, and now I'm really disappointed because I was planning to go to Chiapas but it's just too much if I have to learn a whole additional verb form! confused

Not the whole form Luzbonita, just in the Argentine style. - pacofinkler, May 11, 2011
