The word "hot", followed by "pepper", is the most misleading and confusing word of the English language. Why? Because in my family we have cold and hot food (in terms of temperature), as well as mild (not spicy) and hot (sharp, piquant sensation caused by chillies, for example).
Every time my wife an I ask "Is it hot?", we look at each other and wonder "What is the point of the question? The food can be cold, but piquant, or hot and piquant, or cold and mild, or cold and piquant, so what's the point in asking?
The other problem happens when you often use peppers (the vegetable) and peppers (the spice) in your cooking.
