Preterite or Imperfect? Ser or estar?

My instinct is that it should be "La película era buena" because this is a permanent characteristic and it doesn't have a specific time-frame, but I find the difference between fue, era, estuvo and estaba quite hard to understand.

I would just say:

"La película fue buena." For example, "La película que vi anoche fue buena." - The movie I saw last night was good.

But I've also been told that you could also use "era", in some circumstances at least.

I'd be interested to see what others have to say about this.
