adjectives with agua

I have a beginner's question regarding the following:
El agua en el fregadero es sucia.
"agua" is masculine, so why isn't the adjective "sucio" ?
Is this an exception?

"Agua" is feminine, not masculine. Please, do a search, because we get the same question about "agua" several times per week.
