How I can say "2001"?

I want to say the numbers for year.
For example, I was born at 1988.
How I can say? it is same like english as "nineteen eigthyeight"

The 1000s are said first then the 100s then the rest.
"Mil novecientos (y) ochenta (y) ocho".
Normally the 1st "y" - is left out where I am.
