Help with preterite tense sentences

Why is the preterite tense in these sentences translated as the present tense?
¿Te despertaste temprano? (Did you wake up early?
Sí. Me desperté temprano y estaba lloviendo. (Yes. I did wake up early, and it was raining.)

It's not translated as the present tense. If it was, it would be "Do you wake up early?"
"Did" is past tense. "I did wake up early" is the same as "I woke up early."
