Unintelligible dialect - example of Glaswegian

Occasionally we watch some junk tv, purely to have a rest from thinking - the Jeremy Kyle Show is one example.

I'd say that all of the people who apear on the show with their crazy problems have strong regional accents, but recently heard one that 'took the biscuit'. I could understand approximately half of what the woman said, and my daughter (who is 19) couldn't understand any of it.

Here is a similar accent..

Glasgow Ned on Jeremy Kyle Show (contains some swearing!)

Neds and "ned culture" are associated with violence, particularly in poorer housing estates constructed on the edges of towns and cities after the wars. These lack the social facilities of city centres where former working-class areas have been redeveloped, and gangs of bored youths hang around isolated areas drinking and taking drugs. They are likely to carry knives as part of a culture of violence leading to Scotland having a higher murder rate than England, though gun crime is rare and the murder rate is significantly lower than that in the United States. (thank you Wikipedia.)

However, there are many Scottish people who speak the most beautiful, crisp and precise English, and are not Neds, so don't be afraid to go there!

Geeeeeez, please do not listen if you wish to practise your English, I did understand a lot actually amazing even to myself, ....

Wow, well done, he's absolutely horrendous. I'd be hard pushed to find a worse example of spoken English.

I'd like to add, please folks, I posted this purely to demonstrate that (probably in all languages) there are people whose everyday speech is impenetrable even to others who ostensibly share the same mother tongue.

It would be a masochistic exercise for a learner of English to expend effort trying to decipher this when they could be learning standard English.

However...

have a listen to this little sweetheart with her Yorkshire accent!

No Swearing, I promise!

Wow! I am speechless. I had absolutely no idea that the UK had its own version of the Maury Povich show. My world has been shattered. downer

Jeje...As far as "Glasgow Ned's" accent is concerned, I remember having watched an independent foreign film once which featured a cast who I can only assume must have been raised in the same neighborhood as Ned. Fortunately, the makers of the film were prescient enough to recognize the need to provide subtitles—in English.

I wonder if we can find something similar in Spanish? Last night I found "Elígeme", which appears to be identical to the English show "Take Me Out"! - galsally, May 8, 2011

Thanks for this Sally. I used to have a friend from the notorious Gorbals area of the city. When he moved south to England he found that he had to change his speech patterns somewhat. The result was really pleasing to the ear; he became quite well-known in this city.

The guy in the recording has a completely different sound to his voice - certain circumstances and ... hmm ... life-style choices make him sound - in my opinion - feeble. This also happens where I live; people who have not travelled outside their neighbourhood and have similar "circumstances" - they have limited vocabulary and speech patterns - conversation is replaced by shouting single-syllable words at each other. They are as unintelligible as "Ned"

However, there are many Scottish people who speak the most beautiful, crisp and precise English, and are not Neds, so don't be afraid to go there!

How true! Some friends of mine went to Glasgow recently and reported that the people were among the friendliest they had ever met and that a great evening was had by all.

The Glasgow accent (along with Newcastle, Belfast and Jamaica) remains one of my favourites.

Saludos

Saludos Patch! The gurly I actually heard on the show didn't swear like that guy either, she was more interesting to try to decipher - he was the closest approximation I could find on Youtube. - galsally, May 7, 2011

I enjoy the podcast Coffee Break Spanish presented by two Scots. Their Spanish sounds excellent to me and I'm tremendously entertained by their English.

¡Lo encontré!

I found it!

Quizás os interesaría...

Maybe you'll find it interesting...

Es un programa de españa muy parecido al Jeremy Kyle Show o Maury, se llama:

It's a program from Spain very similar to the Jeremy Kyle Show or Maury, it's called:

El Diario de Patricia

No sé si este vídeo es una representación típica del programa, pero a mí me resulta interesante.

I don't know if this video is a typical representation of the program, but I find it interesting.

A los nativos, ¿Qué os parecen sus acentos? Patricia, desde luego, habla con toda claridad, y las invitadas también hablan bastante bien desde mi punto de vista.

Gracias por vuestro interés. :D

Geeeeeez, please do not listen if you wish to practise your English, I did understand a lot actually amazing even to myself, but of course, in private, as I am always saying, I swear like a trooperraspberry

However, the phrase "you know what I mean" is repeated like ....a hundred times together with the f-word? rolleyes

In any case, please do N O T open the thread , unless you are prepared for a lot of swearing.

I am allowing this thread to show people that even proficient speakers, I guess even natives, find it almost impossible to understand this.

Oh yes, it's really hard for me too, and I hate the utterly meaningless swearing, just interjected into every phrase. - galsally, May 7, 2011
If I'm going to swear I like it to have true emotion behind it!! - galsally, May 7, 2011

You watch Jeremy Kyle to give you a break from 'thinking'??

I would have thought watching that sort of stuff makes somebody think even more!

Well it's a terrible show - it's one of those that, were I to really start thinking about it, I'd become utterly depressed about the state of the country, so I tend to go the other way and just ridicule it. - galsally, May 7, 2011
