Comenzar means to start?
Is Comenzar common in mexico to mean start? because here in South Texas we use comenzar more than empezar

In my experience "comenzar" and "empezar" are interchangeable and it just depends on which one you want to use.
I am going to follow Lorenzo, in speech I hear " comenzar" most often, but in the written word I see "empezar". In RAE there is not much difference.
I think this is one of those cases where different people assign different nuances of meaning to the two words, and there are phrases that commonly use one or the other, depending on region. Kind of like start and begin.
I learned empezar in vocabulary, but in conversation my teacher uses comenzar, and she learned spanish in mexico.
