Please, don't do that. I know, it is like a drug, you think it is going to help, but really is not that much help.
Think about it.
Why watch TV or go to the movies if you want to read?
Pick up a good book in Spanish and start transcribing it and then translate to English.
Movies: Watch one movie over and over till you make sure you understand what's being said, not only what's going on.
Practice your speech by reading a paragraph in Spanish while you record yourself, then go over it. Try to pick up where is is that you're lacking.
It won't too long before you'll be really ahead of the game, then is when you can take it with Spanish (and possibly) English grammar.
That's it.
rtve.es is from Spain and has a tremendous number of shows in Spanish, as well as some in Catalan.
I'd like to watch Spanish videos, movies, news, etc. online with SPANISH subtitles instead of English (for better immersion) I think sometimes I'll understand what I'm hearing better if I can read it as well, but I don't want to revert to English in order to understand it. Does anyone know of any sites with Spanish videos AND Spanish subtitles?
You can also get movies with Spanish subtitles for both movies in English and Spanish at your public library. Sorry, just had to mention it, as I'm treasurer of my local library.
Type in El Perro y el Gato on the YouTube website- there are some funny videos that I watch with my daughter- they're short skits geared towards children to help learn Spanish, and they translate everything into English, and at the end they have a review of some of the words they covered.
Here's a link to one
I wrote a blog post on how to watch English programming with a Spanish audio track and English subtitles. Hope this helps!
If you have an iPhone, you can install a lot of apps to learn spanish. In special, one that has videos with subtitles in english and spanish. If you want i search it and post the name.
More options: in google chrome (mac or windows) exists a plugin to watch international TV sorted by countries and more, it's "chrome TV" (tools - extensions).
I don't know if the usually downloadable chapters of ¿series? have subtitles, but at least you can hear spanish pronunciation.
Sorry for my wrong words..
Greetings!
Honestly, I would like to see something in Spanish with Spanish subtitles that actually matched the spoken Spanish in real time. Maybe I got discouraged too easily and have not made enough of an effort, but my experience has been that either I get:
A sound track and subtitles that say essentially the same thing in different ways (a challenge I am not quite up to yet)- and rarely coincide word for word (mostly this is dvds)
A set of subtitles that are computer generated and not quite right, but are from the actual spoken words, but have the issues of lagging by enough seconds that they never match, and are completely different from the next line the sound has moved on to.
rtve es which is mentioned earlier in this thread has loads of programmes and many of the recent ones have subtitles and a transcript. The subtitles often lag behind the dialogue but the transcript is very helpful. I have watched some of the pagina 2 programmes about books [includes interviews] and have previously spoken about El País para comerselo.
The Mysteries of Laura are also subtitled.
No doubt it is aimed at hearing impaired but it is great for learners.
I 'graduated' to watching non-subtitled Spanish shows, but I find that the key for me, is to watch a program with a topic I am genuinely interested in learning about, such as travelogues and cooking shows.
Cisneros, regarding the app you mentioned for iphone do you know of an app you can download to watch Spanish videos with English subtitles using a BLACKBERRY (mobile phone)? Or some way a person can watch Spanish films with English subtitles on a main computer laptop or desktop?
I have a satelite dish for spanish TV stations. I agree with Chileno, - It will not just soak in! Watching spanish TV is great for learning new ways to combine words and learning spanish idioms, But it will not really teach you. You just have to do the hard work first.
What I've been doing lately is watching videos of scenes from Disney movies in Spanish on YouTube (yes, dorky, I know). One thing I especially like is comparing the European Spanish dubs to the Latin American ones.
Por ejemplo, para El Rey Leon II: link text - European Spanish link text - Latin American Spanish
I love learning from songs. The language may be more florid, but the music helps the words stick!
I watch some shows on tr3s. Mtv's spanish station. You can watch some epidsodes online and alot of them are spanish or spanglish.
