In Spain I have never heard anyone using "mercar"... yet. However, "mercado" is a common word, like market. I guess to a lot of natives "mercar" to "mercado" would sound like "to mark" to "market" (except for "mercar" is a real verb).

According to the R A E, mercar means comprar, but I think it is used more in the sense of buying something at the market (mercado.)

I've never heard anyone say it in Ecuador, but someone from Colombia posted a question about it at wr, so I guess it is used there.

Comprar means "to buy": Ella compra un paraguas. - She buys an umbrella.

But "mercar" seems to translate as "mercer", which is someone who deals in textiles.
