Mah Momma learned me when ah was but a lil' tyke. She done learned me good, too!

Now one day, when we kin be seated by a bonfire, with a nice cup o' moonshine, ah'll be tellin' ya all bout how ah got t'speak English.
I studied grammar quite a bit early on but really wish I would have spent more time just listening (radio, television, etc) and reading (books, magazines, newspapers, etc). In the last year, I have found that I have been able to develop a much more intuitive grasp of the language by focusing more on these aspects. In any case, there are plenty of resources available on the net and at the library to help you towards your goals. Of course, actually going out and immersing yourself in a Spanish speaking culture (even if this just means attending a Spanish church or shopping at a carnicería or panadería) wouldn't hurt either.
In any case, and as Goyo already pointed out, the key is really to practice every day, and enjoy yourself.
You can't do any "one thing" to learn Spanish. You have to pretty much throw the kitchen sink at it!
But for me, the lessons at SpanishDict.com was the central thing that everything else revolved around. The forum and the flashcards were also immensely helpful.
And I used several other sources-
Learning Spanish Like Crazy was a major tool.
The Destinos video series.
The Practice Makes Perfect workbooks.
And practicing every day with one or more of the above and more.
Good luck!
I learn from internet online courses and i have phrasebook also.
But best way to learn is of course to communicate with people ![]()
i use words and frases to teach my sefe
My basic understanding came from two years in high school, but that was a long, long time ago.
Then, I used to practice with "mi suegra colombiana," (my Colombian mother-in-law), but she passed away.
Then, I spent a year in Madrid, taking classes every day. I scheduled two "intercambios" (informal language exchanges) with friends over lunch each week. I also logged onto Spanishdict.com every day.
Now, that I am back in the U.S., I am practicing with my husband a couple of times a week. I still try to get to Spanishdict.com every day.
I sort of learned Spanish in school, but I did a LOT on my own outside of school. I read Spanish newspapers--I like el pais, http://www.elpais.com/global/ also my dad is a HUGE tennis fan, so i read rafael nadal's blog in spanish and translate it for my dad. its kind of a progression, really. watch spanish tv, listened to spanish songs and looked up the lyrics and translations, until i eventually stopped needing the translations. If you come across words you don't know, you look them up, and if the problem is slang, grammar, etc that's what this wonderful FORUM is for! There is also a farmer's market near my neighborhood where it turns out there are several families from colombia and mexico. if you tell people you're learning spanish, they'll usually be more than happy to practice with you. sorry taht's really long...basically, reading lessons and things didn't help me at all. i learned spanish by talking/hearing/reading it in real context and just getting used to it.
I studied it for 4 years in high school, the last two of which were in Caracas, Venezuela. That's where I really learned it, talking to people every day.
I stopped deeming Spanish as an alien language. In other words, read, listen, speak, and take classes in school.
Read my blog and see if it helps you.
