I would use apostar=to bet
Muchas celebridades pierden todo su dinero en apostar. Many celebrities lose all their money gambling.

I've heard "jugar" used for gambling: "¿Ella juega?" - She gambles?
Jugar por dinero might work, but I'm not sure.
I'd be interested to see what others have to say.
