use of "a"

I encountered the following phrase while watching "Muñeca brava 1 Piloto part 1." The priest identifies a woman by saying "la que tiene la gorrita azul, y la camisa a cuadros." The one with the blue hat I understand, but the following "la camisa a cuadros" I am having difficulty with. If a hat can be described as "gorrita azul" why isn't the shirt described as "la camisa cuadros." I don't understand the use of the "a" following "camisa." As always, I appreciate any help in understanding. thanks Gundy

A cuadros means checkered. It's a set phrase.
