Would I use expresarse or manifestarse to say that the different forms of modernism are expressed in vanguardist art?
I have: ...y cómo se expresaron por el arte vanguardista
Does it only make sense if I say cómo fueron expresadas por el arte?

"expresarse" is right.
Example:
Piccaso se expresaba mediante el cubismo.
