Back in the old days (18th and 19th centuries) a young couple would be accompanied by older women (aunts) as chaperones. There is a name for them. What is it?

At least in Mexico, the custom survived well into the 20th century. I've heard the colloquial term "carabina" there. According to the RAE the word is not restricted to Mexico.
