I put olió but my teacher insists that is incorrect. Can anyone verify how to say this? Thanks a bunch.

Hi.

You could put "El tiburón olía la comida", but i see right "El tiburón olió la comida".

Greetings from Spain.

If I were betting, this would be what I would guess is the problem. - 0074b507, Apr 28, 2011

You couldn't give us the complete sentence or more context could you? The only thing that jumps out is that the context may have required the imperfect past (was smelling) rather than the preterite past (smelled). Or the syntax of the sentence may have required the subjunctive mood. Espero que el tiburón oliera....la comida.

It can be a transitive verb, so it's not gustar-like which was my first guess.

oler
