What does "chalumas" mean
I was corresponding with a distant cousin who described the daughters of my grandfather in Nicaragua (Matagalpa, I think) thus way:
She remember the his daughters were called “Chalumas” as a nickname, they live in street at the exit to Jinotega, across Santos Lopez store, where they sold tinajas and ceramic ware.

And: Nombres comunes = Biche, bitze, coralillo, cuajinicuil, cuajiniquil, cuje, cujín, chalahuite, chalum, chelele....
So possibly a connection between a very useful and fruitful plant and individuals with similar characteristics? The flowers alone are indeed attractive....
