Spanish perception of words

One of my friends told me that in Spain swear words are actually common in everyday conversation and are not held as vulgar as they are in the English language is this true? I am not interested in learning any of these words but i would like to know if their culture doesn't see these words as offensive like we do in America.

It seems to me that many people in the US use swear words casually.

Well, one thing that comes immediately to mind here in Spain, 'j----r' is just a fact of life and is tossed around as loosely as a beach ball.
