I am very sorry, I just can't bite my tongue (fingers?) that hard:
Your friend is an idiot. You can tell him/her I said so.
Sheesh...
I agree with Wikipedia's short article on Latin America posted by Otravez. However geographically speaking, North America is from the northern border of Canada to the southern border of Mexico, from there Central America to the southern border of Panama, and from there South America to the southern most border of Chile.
My understanding is, that Mexico is part of North America (NAFTA) but Mexicans are definitely Latinos
Just a little research would clear this question up. start with México in Wikipedia.
No, it is not true, not from my studies. I looked this up just the very other day because a friend of a friend teased me for calling it that.... I think there may be a stigmatism here.....involving a clash of so many identities in the frontera y country.
Your friend probably was trying to say that Mexico is not part of South America and that Mexicans are not South Americans, which I only recently learned (well, I suppose I also learned it in 9th grade geography) and found surprising...having for so long thought that North America consisted of the USA and Canada (Guess I wasn't paying attention all those times people on the News discussed NAFTA).
Honestly, though, my geography knowledge goes something like this: There's Florida, Georgia, Alabama...and all those other places.
Wikipedia has a short article on Latin America. It says it is comprised of those regions in the americas in which the poplulace primarily speaks a Romance language; Spanish, Portuguese and variably, French. Although it does not mention any country specifically, it is accompanied by a generalized map of the North American and South American continents and there are shaded regions which I suppose indicates "Latin America." Mexico is included in the shaded regions.

The Geographical division of the American continent has nothing to do with the Cultural division of the Americas. The latter splits the region into Latin America (including Spanish, Portiguese and French speaking countries), and Anglo America, for the minority of English speaking countries contained therein.
