how to translate "rolling thunder"?

Trying to determine how to translate the phrase "rolling thunder"? As in there were rolling thunder storms across the midwest.

Hello Adam, welcome to the Forum!
That's a tricky one!
As far as I can see, there is no direct translation for "Rolling Thuder". I have seen some interpretations as a literal "trueno rodante", and also "estruendo rodante". I don't find either very satisfactory, but darned if I can think of something better. 
The full sentence is a bit easier, because I have context to play with. I'd say:
Habían /hubieron / tuvimos tormentas eléctricas rodando a través del medio oeste.
