For how you feel and where you are, Always use the verb estar.
Do yourself a big favor and buy a book titled Demystifying Spanish Grammar by Brandon Simpson.
I purchased this fabulous book on Amazon, I believe it was under 10 USD. The book was finally able to explain the Preterite and the Imperfect beautifully.
Keep in mind one thing: I spent a small fortune for grammar textbooks, which I used: reading, exercises etc., and this one little book explains things so lucidly and at a level that is superb. I can make a case that it speaks to a student who does not think and it speaks to a student who over-thinks a problem.
I found that I over-thought the past tenses. This book was right there with me and cut right to the point.
It covers differentiating Ser/Estar and Por/Para and all the other fun stuff in this 'easy' language. (I demand to know who made that up
)
Good Luck in your Spanish adventures.
