Thumbs up?

I have heard that it is rude to do the "thumbs up" in some South American countries. I was just wondering if there was any onther sort of hand gesture or anything that people do over there instead
I was just curious because I do the thumbs up a lot and am currently trying to get out of the habit to avoid offending anyone if I end up travelling
