Yo intento estudiar español.

  1. Your conjugation of intentar is incorrect. Before you add the o ending, you need to drop the stem of the verb, ar. So it goes from intentar -> intent -> intento.
  2. Intentar does not take an a before a verb.

Hope this helps

Oops! I didn't mean to do that. - 0074b507, Apr 24, 2011
how do you know which verbs (like intentar) take (or don't take) a before a following verb? - hharmony, Apr 24, 2011
as far as I know, you just have to remember. - someone09, Apr 24, 2011

Yo intento estudiar español.

But, why don't simple say, "yo estudio español" ? If study means to try, to hard work, and everything else... (just a thought)

So far, nobody's mentioned a finer point, that of the unnecessary subject pronoun, "yo". Since it's out of context, it's impossible to say it should not be used, but I would guess here that it should be left out. The verb conjugation implies "yo", and that makes the "yo" redundant.

Intento estudiar español

or

Estudio español.

Spanish loves redundancy. Why should subject pronouns be any different? - 0074b507, Apr 24, 2011

Ah, but there is a big difference between attempting to do/accomplish something and actually doing/accomplishing it! Intento leer unos libros escritos en español, pero primero necesito estudiar esañol!
