May we fight against ignorance with knowledge.

"May we ..." at the beginning is an interrogative, are you asking a question? - Lector_Constante, Apr 24, 2011
"May we" also expresses a desire or fervent wish : "May we live long and prosper!" = I truly want us to live long and [to] prosper. - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011
That is not a normal use of "may we"; when have you ever said "May we grow up rich!" or something like it?It would sound stilted, affected. - Lector_Constante, Apr 24, 2011
I absolutely agree. Stilted for day-to-day conversation, but not uncommon at weddings and other formal events: "Here's to the newlyweds; may you grow old together, may your love be everlasting..." :-D - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011
Also...it's handy to put old gypsy curses on people... :-D "May your teeth rot and your eyes melt!" - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011
yeah, it's not used in normal conversation, but it's found decently often within literature, music, etc. - someone09, Apr 24, 2011

A drunk guy leans against a lamppost. He thinks that the lamppost is leaning against him.

What you wrote -with 'misma' instead of 'mismo'- would be "...that the lamppost is leaning against itself". - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011

Cleaning up after children is like shoveling against the tide.

If the odds are a million to one against something occurring, chances are 50-50 it will.

Interesting. Has any Spanish-speaker come across the term "en castellano" for "whitewater rafting"? I am inclined to call it "decenso en balsa sobre aguas bravas" but I have a hunch that is just my inclination... - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011

When some people are against something, they say they don't believe in it.

I don't believe in junk food.

I don't believe in exercise.

dice* cree*. - someone09, Apr 24, 2011
"dicen" refers to "they say", not to "alguien". To avoid this confusion, I think the sentence should read "Dicen que cuando alguien está en contra de algo, es porque no cree en ello". - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011
Then again, that's a "Duh!" statement. Leatha, could you shed some light here? - 002067fe, Apr 24, 2011

I was going to give my vote , but on consideration of the pros and cons , I don't think I will , only kidding here goes then. - ray76, Apr 24, 2011
Oh, Thanks, Ray. Are you for or against? - sanlee, Apr 24, 2011
I am against those who are for, and I am for those who are against , is that clear? - ray76, Apr 24, 2011

There are none who fight as hard as those who are against something.

personally, I don't think this is true; also I would phrase it "There is nobody who fights ...", but that isn't how the old aphorism goes ... 8-}
