Excellent Way to Learn a new Language...

Question

If you are learning Spanish, put in a DVD and turn on the Spanish subtitles (or vice versa for English)! Many also have Spanish audio. Whether you chose to have your first language audio with new language subtitles, new language audio with first language subtitles, or both set in the new language, this is a great way to learn applicable vocabulary and natural conversation!

This is a great way to learn . But do not get frustrated when you do not understand everything! You're still learning... :D

I have an advice which requires more patience but brings about more satisfactory results. (As you mentioned.)

Just put in a DVD whose language is Spanish and put Spanish subtitles. Forget about your own language or another one. If you are learning Spanish, don't let others get involved. (Or the same for English..)

Instead of linking the words you see and hear, just understand what's going on. And day by day, you start understanding the meaning, and without even noticing, here you go, you know how to -and more important than that- where to say things which people use to communicate.

Honestly, I learnt both English and Spanish by doing this. But you have to be patient and try to avoid using dictionary...

I like doing that too sometimes, although not all english films or tv have subtitles in spanish. :( It is interesting to see how different nations translate phrases.

Yo también, me gusta verlas películas íngleses con subtítulos españoles, pero no todas hacerlo. Es interesante ver como diferentes naciones traducirán las frases.

I guess it is good for some people.

Usually when I want to read I just grab a book.

When I want to just listen, that's what radio is for.

Ah, but then when I want to listen and see, I watch a movie.

You see, try to watch a movie without sound. By the of the movie you will have somewhat an idea of what the movie was about.

Then watch it with the volume up. Allegedly, if you watch the movie enough times you will end up understanding everything.

But that would take too long.

Instead, transcribe a Spanish novel to Spanish and then translate to English, couple this exercise with watching a movie and you'll be understanding Spanish in no time at all.
