Why do you make a upside down question mark when asking a question?

To alert the reader that what follows is going to be a question. Much more practical than putting the punctuation at the end of the sentence, isn't it? Then they wisely put another one at the end to tell you where the question ends.

I should probably mention that Spanish only includes the interrogative part of a complex sentence withing question marks so using two punctuation marks is a necessity.
