Preterito versus Imperfecto

Question

I am unclear on how to conjugate "conocer" in the following sentence, using either preterito o imperfect. Thank you.

En este viaje Olga y Rubén ___________ (conocer) Santo Domingo y otras ciudades dominicanas.

I am learning towards "conozcan" but am not 100% sure.

It is the preterit tense because although they may have stayed for longer in the cities, their intial 'meeting' of the cities is a concluded action in the past. It, in essence, finishes as soon as it starts. Therefore I would use conocieron (ellos/ellas preterit)

Conozcan is neither preterite nor imperfect.

conozcan [present subjunctive] is neither the preterite nor the imperfect of conocer.

You could probably use conocían or conocieron in the sentence and it would just give it a different shading of meaning.
