Tu is the more familiar form used with friends and aquaintences whereas ustd is the polite form when addressing superiors a sales attendant would use ustd form with potencial customers for instance and you would address your bank manager this way when asking for an overdraft.

It is the difference between you and thou, which is no longer in use: "you" was used in Middle English to address someone politely, and "though" informally; the latter practically disappear... along with the distinction.
