After 1,000,000 points, you get to meet Heidita ![]()
The only thing I can tell for sure about someone by their reputation points is how much they participate in the forums. It also appears to me to be somewhat of a measure of how others here accept them and their participation.
I am proof that reputation can be obtained here by just trying. Also being polite would probably be a big factor.
To me it seems to be a lot like reputation in my face to face experience. I know people with hardly any education who have an excellent reputation based on how well they interact with others.
Having said that, I also want to say that there are some on here that have a very high reputation point level that is a combination of how they treat others, and their actual knowledge of the language. Then again, there are those who join every day that are fluent in both English and Spanish that have the zero reputation that we all start with.
Most of this is just my opinion of how I view the system.
A warn feeling inside.
Reps are important because they tell you whether the person above you (who answered your question) is professional enough to answer your question...
...or is so funny, that he has amassed a lot of reputation making others laugh using English only.
OK, here's a real answer ![]()
Reps are important because they tell you whether the person above you (who answered your question) is professional enough to answer your question or not!
For eg: (if we didn't have reps)
- A question is asked about a very important part in the Spanish language.
- You get 2 answers, 3 or 4!
- First one is a mess! it's full of mistakes and it doesn't answer the question correctly (answered by someone trying to have fun or a newbie who doesn't have enough experience)
- Second one is the correct way to explain your question!
- Now which one are you going to choose since both of the answers explain the same question with a convincing way!
- That's when you'll need to see the reps! of course the one with the most number of reps is the correct one as he-she has more experience that she or he earned it by being voted up on correct answers before!!!
Plus when you reach 10K you'll have a big celebration which will make you feel like you accomplished something by your hard work ![]()
haha, click on the star and it'll tell you!
I, personally, always ask for cake when I get a Reputation Party. Oh, and I like balloons, too.

You get a groove, that's in the heart....what else??!!!
If you know me, you know what's next....

I'm not sure what the answer is but I know that racking up reps is simply addictive. Once you start you can't stop. Hope I get lots of votes with this answer

Basically, what the others have said, plus: reputation
What rep points measure
1 The person's contribution to the SpanishDict community and
2 their experience of having been a contributor to the forum.
What they cannot clearly or accurately measure most of the time
1 The person's standard of Spanish and /or English. For this you need to look at the comments made by others especially the native spanish speakers like Heidi, Lazarus, Gekkosan, Cogumela Tom B ...Dakie etc....in response to the answers a person has given on a post to see if you should accept the answer offered or over an extended period of time to gauge how reliable this person's knowledge of Spanish is..Looking at their profile can also give you some idea, ![]()
2 The speed at which the person is developing proficiency to write /speak Spanish
3 Their ability to speak Spanish You would need to participate in a chat session. If you notice others who take part in Advanced Skype Chat such as Samdie Marianne Joe, or Nemetaken you will see that their level is obviously more advanced
![]()
The principal reason that reputation points cannot easily or accurately measure a person's proficiency in writing Spanish is because reputation points are given for many other reasons apart from skill in translating phrases between English and Spanish. Yet,when they are given by more advanced speakers they occasionally can reflect a good knowledge of either language.Points are given for Congratulating people on achieving milestones, wishing them Happy Birthday taking part in language games, expressing personal views on a wide variety of topics etc...
I hope this helps ![]()

Ether is a class of organic compounds that contain an ether group an oxygen atom connected to two alkyl or aryl groups of general formula ROR. A typical example is the solvent and anesthetic diethyl ether, commonly referred to simply as "ether" (CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3). Ethers are common in organic chemistry and pervasive in biochemistry, as they are common linkages in carbohydrates and lignin.
You see Ether is definently required for many things... or did you mean "either"?
