I approach this royal wedding with mixed feelings: a sense of excitement for the royal couple
mingled with an appreciation that times are very hard for most of the British population as well as for those in the U.K. and many other countries
Regarding the forthcoming royal wedding I am more optimistic that this marriage will last because I believe that Will and Kate really love each other and this is not an arranged marriage like that of Charles with Diana.(Sadly I did not discover this until much later) where neither of the two seemed really suited to each other
However I do realize that the timing is not good news for many British people who are themselves struggling to come to terms with the cuts in public services combined with family difficulties such as redundancy, health problems or long-term unemployment and with what seems like an uncertain job market
While I wish them well for the future as I would do for any couple I have a growing sense of uneasiness about the immense potential cost to the nation of this Royal Wedding. Yes, I do accept that the Queen and some members of the Royal family do a great deal to promote this country's image abroad but why does the amount spent on the engagement ring by the Royal couple have to mentioned by the media at all? If it is their own money I would rather not know but if it is the paid for by the State/tax payer why could they not have found one for a fraction of the cost say 5,000 pounds (Sorry I cannot find my pound sign having changed to U.S. International keyboard)
As an aside I am neither a staunch Royalist nor an anti-royalist (if that is the correct term)I have studied Social and economic history at school focusing on the period from 1688 -1815 which covers the Bill of Rights until the Battle of Waterloo. My observations of history have led me to the view that England along with much of the world has enjoyed good leaders/Kings/Queens - like our present Queen, and bad ones like Henry V111 although such terms are obviously morally relative (except to God our creator who will hold all people to account one day leaders included). For this reason,I find it almost impossible to support the concept of Royalty unconditionally Even in Isreals' colourful history there were good kings/leaders such as David and Josiah and Deborah and bad kings such as Ahab and Manassah who ruled Judah and /or Isreal wisely or with evil intent respectively but none were perfect
Why do these weddings always seem to happen in the midst of economic problems?
Charles and Diana in the ´80s The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in the late ´40s.
Is this a subtle but cynical attempt to cheer the nation in hard times and mask the more important news happening in the world, or a just a thoughtlessly extravagant gesture while the plebs are losing their jobs and homes?
Well, at least we can all eat cake these days.
Es un buen día para una boda blanca.
It's a good thing he's not going to have a wedding ring: it could bankrupt the country.
Hi, Sarah! Yesterday on Radio XEDA (Imagen), a great Mexican station that you can listen to online, they were chatting about your question! One caller said: No me quita el sueño --I'm not losing any sleep over it. Estoy de acuerdo con ella. (By the way, Sarah, remember to capitalize "I" for all the English learners out there.)
Extravagance and nonsence to boost a humdrum life says it all!
This is the first i've heard of it! ![]()
It sucks.
I'm so glad it's over.
I really could care less. I have no idea when it is and I don't see why their wedding is big news in the US.
I just hope that they are happy.
I did watch a bit of it. I loved the choir at the church and I absolutely loved all the ladies in their hats.
Some were quite creative
The Queen wore al yellow hat
How do they stay on?
They are certainly something to see.
I am not usually a hat person myself
But I did enjoy seeing them all today
2nd attempt
What royal wedding?
Yes.... Yes....Yes, what a clueless species we are. $60M spent on a wedding when skeletal children crawl the streets searching for grains of rice for food.
I could go on but would probably lose commonfolk attention with more than one sentence.
