Desechos, same as basura?

Question

Is it exactly the same? I guess, unwanted objects. Maybe the trash is what is in the back in the can, and the desechos are the furniture and baby toys we put out in the front for the garbage man?

In Farscape (great in Spanish) they used it to means "dregs" like "we are in the deepest dregs of Space". So I guess it can be figurative like that too.

I usually translate "desechos" as "refuse". I think in fact that would be an exact match of meaning.

Can you confirm, good sir, that it can means the dregs of society, as in, the unwanted parts of say..... a mobster collective with whom you wish not to associate? As it was used, somewhat, like this in Farscape. Gracias.
