In the dictionary this word a male or female noun. If the person is a masseur would you call him "el masajista"?

you know, in spanish, words which is terminated in "ista", can be used both as masculin and feminin name. their gender is determinded by the person they are used for: if you want to use them for a masculin person, you have to say "el ..." and if for female person, then say "la ...": just as: deportista, periodista and other examples.
