It appears I need to have a "reputation" in order to reply to a message from another user. Anyone want to help me out?

Well, welcome to the forum, generally you have to earn "Reputation" (as hints the word reputation), however, I'll give you a vote and you'll have to earn the other one. Good luck with you're learning.
