backwards accent marks

I noticed that sometimes accent marks are pointed if different directions, sort of on different sides of a letter. For example ò or ó. In Spanish does it really matter which I use? Thanks!

The Spanish use the acute accent, eg éxito = success, except for foreign words, as Qfreed rightly says. The grave is used in French ò but not for Spanish words.

I hope that helps grin

There are two main keyboard configurations for Spanish: Spanish - Spain / Spanish - Latin America... The first one has the accent to the right of the Ñ (which is at the right of the L), and the second one has the accent to the right of the P. Most people confuse them because when you want to use the accent at the right of the P and your configuration is Spanish - Spain, you get a "backwards accent".

it's also possible she was reading some Catalan. Accents go both ways and there are a lot of apostrophes. - rabbitwho, Apr 14, 2011

acento agudo or acute accent mark

The one going the other way, like the French ò is a grave accent mark.
