I would like to know if there is a way to translate this into english or at least to know what the tone of this phrase would be in english. The full sentence reads "El estaba cargando una bolsa con las sobrinas." But I know it isn't talking about a bag full of nieces. Thanks!

Jajaja, this must be a joke.

In Mexico, "sobrinas" is a slang word for "sobras" (leftovers)

Una bolsa con las sobrinas.

A bag full of leftovers.

Well, in the capital, Distrito Federal, we use "sobrinas". - LuisCache, Apr 14, 2011

In México you can have "una bola de sinverguenzas' which is a bunch of scoundrels. So I suppose you could also have "una bola de sobrinas" a bunch of cousins,

Cargar and bolsa have so many meanings that it is hard to guess without further context.

I would guess that he is managing some type of joint financial account with his nieces. If you look in our dictionary bolsa is used to refer to stocks or to the stock market.
