How do these sentences express different meanings

Translating this English sentence to Spanish: "I'm sorry you are sick."
Pres. Subjunctive: "Siento que esté Ud. enfermo." Pres. Indicative: "Lo siento que Ud. está enfermo."
Assuming these are correctly constructed according to the mode indicated, is there any difference in meaning? If not, is one preferred over the other? If so, why?

The second one (with "lo") is not grammatically acceptable. That's the difference.
