I may have misunderstood the question but I think tmce80 wants to know when the e changes to ie in the conjugations of merendar.

It only changes in 3 conjugations.

Present indicative

• meriendo • meriendas • merienda • merendamos • merendáis • meriendan

present subjunctive

• meriende • meriendes • meriende • merendemos • merendéis • merienden

imperative

• - null- • merienda • meriende • merendemos • merendad • merienden

Welcome to the forum!

In your sentence, you have already conjugated the verb "gustar" to "gusta". It is then followed by an infinitive used as a noun, so you would not conjugate it.

This is a complicated topic that is discussed often on this forum. In Spanish, infinitives can be used as nouns (in English, we use gerunds for that). In those cases, the infinitives are not conjugated.

I don't know if that answers your question, but others may offer a better explanation.

My understanding is that when a verb follows a conjugated verb it is always in the infinitive. Now I could be completely wrong. Let's see was more advanced people say.
