There were natives from both Spain and S America and they all agreed on it. - margaretbl, Apr 12, 2011

Don't take it bad, but have you tried the dictionary? The word is unsurprisingly similar in both languages (since it is a Latin-derived term, and Spanish is modern Latin).

In one of the recent Spanish Skype chats I was asked where I live and I wanted to say the suburb of Vancouver but was suddenly stuck for the word. All the hispanohablantes agreed I should say 'barrio'. grin

:barrio" basically means "neighborhood" (either within the city or in its outlying districts).

After some careful consideration, I have to add that in Spanish "suburbio" refers to both an outlying area and a slum area.

I have also heard the word "afuaras" used to mean suburb, in addition to the one that is almost a cognate.

Qfreed is right: afueras. Also, "afuera" (a + fuera). - lazarus1907, Apr 9, 2011
